New year, new trends! Let's take a deep dive into the interior design trends we'll be seeing this year and how to incorporate them into your space.
We're going to break it down into 6 key trends:
Bold textiles
Curvature
Colours & Personal Style
Dark Wood
Biophilic Design
Statement Stone

BOLD TEXTILES
Whether it's a statement rug, throws, or drapery, this year we're all about having art in places that aren't typically considered art. Instead of opting for a textile that blends in, we're looking for statement pieces that will give your space some personal flair.
DO: Have fun with it! Find a quirky piece that makes you smile and tie it into your space with otherwise neutral finishes.
DON'T: Invest in large pieces for this trend. Focus on items that can be changed if needed, such as pillow covers, throw blankets, area rugs, or curtains.

CURVATURE
Curves are EVERYWHERE right now. We're talking arched everything, curved sofas and coffee tables, rounded bed frames, even staircases and architectural elements. I'm obsessed with the DIY archways everyone's creating in their home, and I'll definitely be trying it out myself this year.
DO: Have something 'curved' in every space in your home. If every piece of furniture you own is linear or square, your space will feel clunky and potentially outdated. Refresh your space with one curvilinear item, whether it's a round coffee table or desk chair, and you'll notice a huge difference.
DON'T: Break the bank buying a curved sofa or changing architecture if you're worried about trends. If you can afford it, by all means, DO IT, but it can be pricey so don't invest in a piece if you're worried about it going out of style in a few years.

COLOURS & PERSONAL STYLE
2023 is all about embracing your personal style and having fun with your interiors. It's out with the one-size-fits-all interior style and in with putting your heart into your space. This is the perfect opportunity to try thrifting some pieces or purchasing secondhand.
DO: Scroll through Pinterest and your fave celebrities' homes for some inspiration, and create your space using your favourite take-aways!
DON'T: Buy a ton of pieces before considering how they'll look together. While we want to experiment self expression and fun colours, we also want to make sure your space feels cohesive and has longevity.

DARK WOOD
Nobody panic!! Your brand new light wood flooring is still beautiful, and you don't need to change it. This year we're seeing a lot of mixed wood tones and incorporating darker woods. This relates back to using antiques and secondhand pieces, it feels nostalgic and allows your space to look less cookie cutter.
DO: Mix some new wood tones into your space! Don't be afraid of wood-on-wood, separate them with rugs and bright textiles to keep it fresh. If you're looking for new flooring, consider a medium or dark wood.
DON'T: Redo everything and commit to dark wood everywhere, and use darker wood in the right context! We're not talking a set of all dark, overly traditional furniture from The Brick, we're talking select antique pieces and real wood finishes to give your space some warmth.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN
It's no secret that our generation is obsessed with plants. Biophilic design refers to bringing the outdoor and nature into your home, and has proven effects on our productivity and wellbeing. This year we'll be seeing a lot of takes on this, with natural fibres such as leathers, jutes, stone, and woods, and creating spaces that have nature as the focal point.
DO: Incorporate more plants and natural materials into your space. Natural light is also a huge part of biolphilic design, and should always be considered in your room for the most significant impact.
DON'T: Make your home into a mini jungle. Biophilia is so much more than a ton of tiny plants, think natural materials and textiles, nature-inspired shapes and natural light.

STATEMENT STONE
We've been noticing statement stones everywhere over the past few months, and that will not be changing this year. While we're on the trend of natural materials and personal style, we're also all about loving dramatic, statement stones, in fun colours and variations.
DO: Choose a statement piece of stone for a small feature space such as a coffee bar, powder room, or coffee table. This will ensure that you won't be regretting your decision in 5 years.
DON'T: Put stone everywhere. You still want your space to feel warm and inviting, and in order for this trend to be evergreen in your space, you can't go overboard.
